Why is running good for you?
I was looking through some old words of wisdom from an old coach and found the following. I'm particularly interested in No 5
WHY IS RUNNING GOOD FOR YOU?
Who likes to go for a run when they are feeling stressed or agitated but when you get back you feel more relaxed and feel motivated again?
As if you didn’t already know running is good for you but did you know there are at least six reasons why we all feel better after a run:
1. Running reduces the production of stress hormones, increases the anti-stress hormone DHEA, making you happier and more relaxed
2. Runners require 33% fewer breaths to take in the same amount of oxygen as a sedentary person.
3. Running improves blood fat levels, your HDL (good cholesterol) increases up to 30%.
4. Running helps build bone mineral density thus reducing your risk of osteoporosis.
5. Most importantly for us older runners, running counts as one of the best preventative measures against Alzheimer's.
6. Finally, of course running makes you look 10 years younger
Now you know why we all go out in the cold and rain. Look what you could be missing if you don't go out and run!
