Club Handicap Race
Memorial Club Handicap Race
What is it?
The handicap run is an annual race where all runners cover approximately 5k distance. Ahead of the event, runners provide their best 5k time for the year. Runners are set off in a staggered fashion with those with the slowest submitted time starting first and those with the quickest times starting last. The theory would be that if every ran their submitted time everyone would finish together. In reality there is a lot of catching up and overtaking which adds to the fun.
When is it?
The handicap run for 2025 takes place on Tuesday 22nd July. Meet at 7pm for a 7:15 start.
Where is it?
The 2025 event will take place along the prom, starting at the bottom of Canford Cliffs Chine. Park near Canford Cliffs village on or near The Esplanade which is the road between the Cliff and Canford pubs. If it’s a hot day, please leave some extra time for finding a parking space.
Why are we doing something different this year?
We wanted to put on a memorial event which brings together Striders and their families to do something we love (running and socialising) while remembering Striders we have sadly lost in recent years. We chose the location as many of those we are remembering used to love to run in this location. In addition, being on the prom it will be a fast and flat route and it will be much clearer who you are chasing or being chased by which adds to the fun. We hope everyone can stay on afterwards to socialise - either on the beach if the weather is good (BYO refreshments and swim kit if you fancy a dip) or at The Canford pub if it’s too wet or windy. The run will take place whatever the weather.
What is the route?
The route starts by the lifebelt at the bottom of Canford Cliffs Chine. Runners set off east towards and past Branksome. Just after the ice cream kiosk with a blue roof you will see a marshal ahead. Run around the marshal and head back past the start and all the way to Shore Road where you will see another marshal. Run around the marshal and back to the start to finish on the left.
